COMPETENCIES, HOW DO WE GET THEM?

You have probably came across different competence building models. One of them is a Dreyfus model. It is built on the concept of five-steps, where the competence is gained from different approaches to knowledge, understanding and experience.

The Newbie (the debutant)

If you’ve got the knowledge it’s rather theoretical. It takes time and energy to complete a task. A measurable, easy to reach goal will enforce your focus and motivation. You haven’t got your PMS yet;) Your knowledge comes from other newbies blogs. You help the the team by organizing meetings and making sure everything goes nice’n’easy.

The Advanced Newbie

You feel comfortable with given tasks you’ve already done. You are fluent in your work. You are getting confident about how high your competences level is. You are taking skill-guided-shortcuts and you are the opposite of humble.
Developing Scrum Master already has a certain set of skills and experiences that will let to end the retrospection with a proper to do list. However gained knowledge may lead to arrogant behaviours. You will feel the confidence to “coach” the organisation you’re working with (“we should fire all the managers ’cause products are being made anyway”) even if you don’t have any experience in the product management process. Remember: overconfidence killed the cat.

The competent

You are a good craftsman following well-known paths, taking full responsibility for your actions. Your skill-set is still poor but you continuously analyze and develop it. You are at the point of realizing that your solutions aren’t the best.

As a Competent Scrum Master you choose the right tools to face the challenge. You  constantly develop your workshop and react quickly to recurrent situations (for example in retrospective). You are looking for skills in others and feeling the need to learn the context before giving advice.

The proficient

You are aware of the diversity of potential circumstances and angle for context while solving a problem. You always try to find and understand the principles of solutions you’re taking into consideration. You are aware that problems will emerge if you take a shortcut or follow wrong assumption.

As a proficient Scrum Master you know where you and your team are. You are able to foresee upcoming problems. You analyze the group process and focus on separate tasks. You know the price of value and quality not beeing balanced. You plan each step but need a lot of effort to get things done.

The Expert

You not only see but feel more. You are able to verify a problem along with the context. Your intuition gives you the right tips (well, at least usually;). You are experienced and aware of the context complexity. You know that you are not a prophet. You are looking for analogies and recurring patterns in different areas of life. You’ve got so called “muscle memory” working while analyzing unfamiliar situations to have a better understanding of context.

A Yoda Master of Scrum. There is plenty of  competence building models and it  doesn’t matter which w’ll use – a model is just a simplification. The real transformation will not just happen. And as H.Dreyfus said:
“To become competent you must feel bad”.
